Boxing and Shows
The Hollenbeck Youth Center’s boxing program is known internationally for producing Olympic Gold medalists and world boxing title champions.  Shows consist of a one-day amateur boxing tournament, which is sanctioned by the USA Boxing Association. A recognition award is also given for best performance. Participants in this tournament compete for gold/silver/bronze awards.

Flag Football
This is a program where teams compete for gold/ silver/ bronze award places. Participants in this sporting event can practice their skills catching a pass running down field and kicking a football in a fun and competitive environment.

Karate
Participants learn Traditional Karate-Shito-ryu and build the presentation, competition, confidence and teamwork skills. The top qualifying individuals for each belt level compete for position award in the tournament finals, Jr., Olympics and Nationals.

Weightlifting
The Hollenbeck Center’s weightlifting program continues to be sponsored by Arnold Schwarzenegger for over 20 years, benefiting the lives of thousands of young people.

Soccer
All participants are rewarded for their participation with medals and t-shirts. Our intent is to promote the greater life skills of honor, teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. The young players also have the opportunity to practice the skills in handling the ball, to take their opponents through dribbling, to come to the aid of their teammates in trouble, to find the open player to pass and to take the risk to shoot the ball.

Softball
This is a program, where teams compete for gold/silver/bronze awards. Participants of this event have the opportunity to further develop their tactical skills in hitting, running, fielding, and pitching, while competing against other teams in the preliminary competition games. The top qualifying teams for each division then compete for position awards in the tournament finals.

 

Swimming
Participants have the opportunity to compete against their peers, as well as further enhance their skills in butterfly, backstroke, restaurant, and freestyle. This is a championship tournament where all participants compete for gold/ silver/ bronze award places in various events.

Kenny Earl, the first HYC sports director was instrumental in organizing the original girl’s sports programs following the passage of Title 9 Federal directives in the 1980s. 

Basketball – Boys and Girls
Participants have the opportunity to further develop their skills in dribbling, passing, free throws, shooting, defense, and rebounding, by competing against other teams in the preliminary competitions. The top qualifying teams for each division compete for position awards in the tournament finals.

 

Overview

The Hollenbeck police business council is the founding agency of The Inner-City Games. The Inner-City Games Los Angeles is a marquee program, reaching nationwide to involve hundreds of thousands of youth in positive athletic competition and educational programs.
